Val Kilmer, Acclaimed Actor Known for ‘Top Gun’ and ‘Batman Forever,’ Dies at 65​

Val Kilmer, an actor who was known for his parts in “Top Gun,” “Batman Forever,” and “The Doors,” died of pneumonia at the age of 65. His daughter Mercedes Val Kilmer confirmed his death on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

Born Val Edward Kilmer in Los Angeles on December 31, 1959, he displayed an early passion for acting. At 17, he became the youngest student accepted into the Juilliard School’s drama department. Val Kilmer’s film debut was in the 1984 comedy “Top Secret!” followed by notable performances in “Real Genius” (1985) and as Lt. Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in “Top Gun” (1986), a role he reprised in the 2022 sequel “Top Gun: Maverick.” Oliver Stone’s “The Doors,” claims Val Kilmer acted Jim Morrison in 1991. He sang several of the musical pieces in the film himself to demonstrate his dedication.

His flexibility was once more shown by his performances as Doc Holliday in “Tombstone” (1993) and Batman himself in “Batman Forever” (1995). In 2014, when he learned he had throat cancer, Kilmer’s voice changed with the treatments. He maintained working for the firm even with health problems. He appeared in the 2021 documentary “Val,” which used personal film to provide a close-up picture of his life and work.

Val Kilmer is survived by his two children, Mercedes and Jack, from his marriage to actress Joanne Whalley.
