According to a report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner, Aubrey Plaza and her director husband Jeff Baena had not seen each other in four months before he tragically killed himself on January 3, 2025. They started dating in 2011 and married in a small wedding in 2021. However, they had problems in their marriage, which led to their split in September 2024. Plaza was worried about what Baena said in October 2024, so she asked for a safety check on him. After this happened, Baena started going to treatment. Even after they broke up, they kept in touch. Plaza got a text message from Baena the morning of his death.
Baena’s body was discovered later that day by his dog walker at his Los Angeles residence.

Baena, 47, was known for his work in independent cinema, including writing and directing “Life After Beth,” a zombie comedy starring Plaza, and creating the anthology series “Cinema Toast,” which aired in 2021 and featured Plaza’s directorial debut.
After he died, Aubrey Plaza and Baena, his parents, said in a statement that it was an “unimaginable tragedy” and thanked everyone for their support. They also asked for privacy during this hard time.

The first time Aubrey Plaza saw the public since Baena’s death was at the party for “Saturday Night Live’s” 50th anniversary. She brought on singing friends Brittany Howard and Miley Cyrus.
They worked together on personal and business projects during their ten-year relationship, which showed that their love was strong even after they got married.
