On February 4, 2025, Sweden suffered its deadliest mass Sweden shooting to date at Campus Risbergska, an adult education institution in Örebro. The horrific event claimed eleven deaths and many more injuries, including those of the claimed shooter.
Incident Overview
About 12:33 PM local time, reports of a gunshot at Campus Risbergska, an institution largely serving those who have not completed basic or secondary education, arose. The facility is located on a campus home to other colleges as well. Believed to have acted alone, the 35-year-old assailant was not known to law enforcement prior. Authorities have said that the incident does not provide any evidence of ideological or terrorist motivations.
Eyewitness Accounts
Maria Pegado, a 54-year-old instructor at the institution, related the horrific event:
“I took all my 15 students out into the hallway and we started running. Then I heard two shots but we made it out. We were close to the school entrance. I saw people dragging injured out, first one, then another. I realised it was very serious.”
Lena Warenmark, another instructor, said she heard around ten gunshots close to her study area, then a little silence before more rounds. She stayed in her study for more than an hour during the event.
Official Response
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said addressing the country:
“It is hard to take in the full extent of what has happened today—the darkness that now lowers itself across Sweden tonight.”
He expressed his sympathy to the victims and their families and underlined the challenge in understanding the scope of the catastrophe.

National Context
Although Sweden shooting has had problems with gang-related violence lately, deadly assaults at schools are rather unusual. The worst mass shooting in the history of the country, this one fuels debates on public space and school security policies. As the inquiry is under way, authorities are exhorting the people to stay calm and give law enforcement room to carry out their operations.
