Nora Aunor, Philippine Cinema Icon and National Artist, Passes Away at 71​

The Philippines mourns the loss of one of its most cherished cultural icons, Nora Aunor, who passed away on April 16, 2025, at the age of 71. Her son, Ian de Leon, confirmed her death in a heartfelt social media post, describing her as “the heart of our family — a source of unconditional love, strength, and warmth.” Her daughter, Matet, also paid tribute, calling her “our queen” and “our superstar.”

The famous singer Nora Aunor was born Nora Cabaltera Villamayor on May 21, 1953, in Iriga, Camarines Sur. She started her career as a singer after winning a talent show in her hometown. She became well-known very quickly and began acting. In movies like “Himala” (1982), “Tatlong Taong Walang Diyos” (1976), and “The Flor Contemplacion Story” (1995), she had strong parts. Some people called her a “Superstar” because of her work in Filipino movies. In 2022, she was given the Order of National Artists of the Philippines for Film and Broadcast Arts.

Even though she was well-known, Aunor stayed close to her roots. She was known for being gentle and taking pride in her work. She had health problems in the past few years, which is why she dropped out of the 2025 election, saying that doctors told her to avoid stressful situations.

Officially, the reason for her death has not been released, but rumors say she was having a medical procedure at a hospital in Pasig when she died. Pilita Corrales, another famous Filipino, died not long before her. This is a sad time for the country’s entertainment business.
